What does ASUCH do?
Posted by Elaine Cheung on Aug 25, 2004, 18:02

ASUCH meets every other Wednesday evening for approx. 2 hours to vote on resolutions and resolve student concerns.  Most of our work, however, is accomplished through the following committees.

ASUCH  Committees & Task Forces 2004-2005

Each committee and subcommittee shall be chaired by a member of the ASUCH Executive Board or General Council.  All committees and task forces shall consist of an odd number of voting members.  The ASUCH President shall serve as an ex-officio member on all committees and task forces.  Nonmembers or students at-large may serve in an ex-officio capacity.  All committees and task forces shall be governed by parliamentary procedure as detailed in Robert’s Rules of Order.

Finance Committee (Fall)

This committee will review all student organization budget requests and propose student allocations to the General Council for approval.  This committee shall propose allocations twice a year.

 ELECTIONS COMMITTEE

This committee will manage the 1L elections in the fall, the ASUCH elections in the spring, and any other referendums during the year.

                Community Service Committee

The committee will coordinate volunteer activities and provide an efficient and effective way of presenting community service opportunities to Hastings students, known as Hastings Helps!  The Hastings Helps! Program includes at least a day per semester when this committee organizes Hastings students to volunteer on a project in the community.

Youth Chance Initiative Subcommittee: This subcommittee shall be responsible for planning shadow day and tutoring projects with Youth Chance High School.

Student Life Committee

This committee will plan social and athletic events for Hastings students.

Special Events Subcommittee: This subcommittee shall assist in the planning of special social events at Hastings, including but not limited to, Barrister’s Ball and Bar Reviews.

Beer on the Beach Subcommitee:  This subcommittee shall be responsible for planning the Beer on the Beaches.

Athletic Services Subcommittee: This subcommittee shall be responsible for the  athletic and fitness programs at Hastings, including but not limited to, the intramural league, gym equipment, and scheduling.

HASTINGS IMAGE & MARKETING COMMITTEE

This committee will work with the administration on improving the College’s image and marketing program.  It will submit a proposal to the General Council for approval to deliver to the Board of Directors.  Projects include obtaining a new school logo and working with the technology department for an improved website.

OUTREACH COMMITTEE

This committee will organize the Student Issues Forum and will be in charge of planning other publicity for ASUCH-sponsored programs and events.

STUDENT LOBBY COMMITTEE

This committee will plan lobby days at City Hall and Sacramento, coordinate efforts with other schools, and organize student rallies and press conferences.  All issues lobbied for must be derived from this committee and passed as resolutions by the General Council.

INSTALLATION & AWARDS COMMITTEE

This committee will plan and coordinate a dinner at the end of the year, early April, to recognize the new ASUCH members and to present various awards, including but not limited to the following: ASUCH Member of the Year, Student Organization Leader of the Year, Faculty Member of the Year, Alumni of the Year, and Administrator of the Year.  The purpose behind of this event is to create a system of transferring power to new ASUCH Members, and more importantly, to recognize the work of student organizations that contribute, often times thanklessly, to student life here at Hastings.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

This committee shall be responsible for cultivating professional opportunities for students by working on issues with the Office of Career Services and the Office of Alumni Services.  The committee shall work with the administration in coordinating the Legacy Dinners and managing the business cards program.  This committee will also meet with the head of Career Services once a month to provide Career Services with student feedback.  It will implement and organize the first annual phone-a-thon whereby student volunteers (including non-ASUCH members) call small and mid-size firms to update hiring information, promote Hastings’ name, and brush up on their individual cold-calling skills.

HEALTH SERVICES COMMITTEE

This committee shall voice student concerns and interests to the administration as they relate to the programs offered by the Office of Health Services.  Members will work directly with the Health Services.

task force on student safety

This group will work on ensuring that the best safeguards are in place at the 200, 198, and Tower buildings.  The task force will meet regularly with the administration, and explore questions regarding security, lighting, and surveillance equipment.  This group will also work on implementing a walking escort service to the Bart/Muni station in UN Plaza.  It will prepare a report, including recommendations, to the ASUCH General Council for approval for submission to the Board of Directors.

TASK FORCE ON ASUCH HISTORY

This group will work on going through the documents in the ASUCH office and present a report on the accomplishments and issues of the preceding ASH/ASUCH bodies to the ASUCH General Council, which will approve it for posting on the ASUCH website.

TASK FORCE ON FUNDRAISING

This group will organize fundraising events for the College, including Race Judicata.  Members will work in conjunction with the alumni office.

TASK FORCE ON TECHNOLOGY

This group will work with the administration on testing and selecting a new e-mail system for the student body, as well as advise on the state of technology at the College.

TASK FORCE ON THE ASUCH OUTLINE BANK & FACULTY/COURSE GUIDE

This group will work on improving the selection and quality of course outlines available on the ASUCH website as well as explore the possibility of creating a student-based faculty/course guide.
