Q&A about ASUCH Service Hours Requirement
Posted by ASUCH on Feb 7, 2004, 00:10

Why are service hours required for ASUCH class representatives?

First, it is good organizational policy to integrate new representatives into the organization to have them work side by side with current members.  Second, students get to know one another personally.  That doesn't happen in regular meetings.  We are all too busy attending to business then we want to go home.  Third, we learned all of this because of the effects of eliminating the historical reason for ASUCH rep time.

ASUCH representatives for years staffed the ASUCH office on a regular basis in order to provide course outlines to students from the outline bank. "Ye olde outline banque" went online in 2001, so the hours needed for that task disappeared. Other work remained to do but people forgot about the service hours requirement when the outlines became cyberoutlines. In addition, in order to flyer and SIC drop so that we can advertise student events, people power is needed far beyond what the Board members can accomplish, given their regular established duties.

You must regularly attend meetings, which occur every two weeks on Wednesday evenings after most classes have ended.

Following is the ByLaw Section addressing attendance and other matters:

SECTION 3. MEMBERSHIP
3.10 Removal
(a) A Member of the General Council shall be removed from office without discretion in the following instances:
(1) Failure to satisfy the attendance requirement;

3.40 Reinstatement
(a) Member may be reinstated by requesting the Internal Vice-President to conduct an election for the student body for her or his reinstatement. A majority of those voting must approve of her or his reinstatement.
3.50 Attendance
(a) Attendance at ASUCH General Meetings is governed as follows:
(1) After missing three meetings in one semester or two consecutive meetings, the Secretary shall notify the member of pending removal.
(2) After the fourth absence or third consecutive absence in one semester, the member is automatically removed.
3.60 Service Hour Requirement
(a) All Members of the General Council shall serve a minimum of 15 hours in their respective capacities per semester.
(b) Certification of service hours shall be vested with the President. However, he or she may delegate such power to Executive Board Members and Committee or Task Force Chairs.
