Newly admitted students should consider running for 1L ASUCH Representative
Posted by ASUCH on Feb 26, 2004, 21:46

Have you been accepted to UC Hastings?  Start thinking now about becoming involved in student government!  Our student council is called ASUCH--Associated Students, UC Hastings.

Since most students will enter as 1Ls, remarks will be addressed to them.  2L and 3L representatives are elected in the Spring Semester preceding their term of service.  Other opportunities within student government are available for transfer students, such as committee participation.

Elections for 1L Representatives are held shortly after school begins, generally in the first or second week of September.  There are two representatives for each "section".  When you enter Hastings you will be assigned to one of four or five sections.  Thus, your constituency will consist of 1/4 or 1/5 of the entering class.

Be alert to announcements for candidate statements.  Each candidate must submit a one-page statement of candidacy that will be posted on a bulletin board for your section-mates to read.

A few days after that, the election will be held during a class period.  Please be prepared to say a few words as a campaign speech right before the ballots are distributed.  A minute's worth of gab should be fine.

As a 1L representative, you will be called upon to make announcements in your classrooms regarding: upcoming events, committee memberships, solicitations for help, etc.  ASUCH legislates: it considers resolutions authored by ASUCH members, which are generally available a week before consideration.  You may also prepare your own resolutions as well.  You may want to consult your classmates about these resolutions before you cast your vote.  Of course, as a member of a representative deliberative body, you may vote based on your conscience.

All ASUCH representatives have meeting attendance requirements and modest service hour requirements.  You can learn more about these requirements by reviewing other articles in the Elections Section: Election FAQs, Q&A about ASUCH Service Hour Requirements, and the Constitution and Bylaws in the ASUCH Governing Documents section.
