This page is a first attempt at preparing a history of ASUCH. Well, that's what we think, anyway, in the Spring of 2003. An organization like this has a short institutional memory because students are only here for three years. The school has been in existence since 1878, so theoretically, there could have been scores of attempts to do the same thing. Here's our shot at it.
In the 2002-2003 year, ASUCH instituted Town Hall meetings each semester, where the Chancellor and Dean, and other Deans met with students directly, taking and answering questions in an open forum. We also passed resolutions supporting diversity in higher education, and against the Congressional resolution supporting Presidential authority to attack other countries pre-emptively. Further, student fees were allocated to important student-run initiatives, such as the A/PALSA conference, the SALSA conference, La Raza conference, Hastings Race and Poverty Law Journal, and the Entertainment and Sports Law event. Journals also received funds to hold symposia.
In the 2001-2002 term, ASUCH researched and implemented a superior student health plan.
ASH=Associated Students of Hastings was the name the student organization bore before Hastings became loosely affiliated with the University of California system. We remained ASH until a rename resolution passed in the mid 1990s, when we became Associated Students, UC Hastings (ASUCH).
